I cannot even begin to describe how happy I am that it is finally the weekend!!!! And not only is it the weekend, it also happens to be my SIL birthday today...so a big Happy Birthday to Emily today!
------------------------------------------------------
A few years ago during Hannah and Olivia's season of the Biggest Loser, I learned about a race series that was out there
The Spartan Race series was created by eight ultra athletes, and it is growing exponentially, one of the founders Richard Lee was quoted last year "Worldwide, we've gone from 5,000 people in four races in 2010 to 20 races with 250,000 participants in year two, 750,000 participants in year three, and we are going to end our fourth year with 1.5 million participants worldwide."
So what exactly is a Spartan Race? Check out this video to see for yourself
Spartan Race Series actually has several different race distances to challenge beginners right up to ultra elite athletes looking to challenge themselves. Courses start at a 1 mile distance and go right up to 26 miles in length.
Every race has obstacles along the way, but unlike most other races out there, you are not given a course map until the day of the run. The obstacles are different for each race, and you can never be sure which ones you are going to be faced with.
Failure to complete an obstacle result in burpees as your punishment.
Frequently presented obstacles include:
1.Fire jump
2. Barbed wire crawl
3. Over-Under-Through
4. Spear throw
5. Wall Climb
6. Heavy Object carry
7. Herculean Hoist
8. Tyrolean Traverse (tightrope over water)
9. Traversal Wall
10. Slippery Wall
11. Gladiator Arena
12. Hobie Hop (tire jumps while having your ankles restrained)
13. Log Jump
14. Rope Climb
Due to Spartan's rapid growth and popularity, last year it partnered with
NBC Sports and in December 2013 NBC televised the Spartan Race World Championships, in which the prize purse was $250,000
Ever since I have learned about this series, I have been trying to convince others to participate in one with me...sadly I have not succeed yet...but fingers crossed I'll wear someone down soon ;). We all know my love for the sunshine state of Florida - so my race of choice would probably be Miami. A few other up-coming USA stops also include Atlanta and Charlotte North Carolina.
And I have some exciting news for ya'll!!!!!! Spartan Race Series have generously given me a "one free entry" to give away - it can be used on any open heat in any 2014 Spartan Race in the continental US.
To enter leave a comment below telling me which race you would choose. To earn extra entries...share the giveaway on your blog, twitter, Facebook or IG. Let me know below how you've shared it, and you will receive 1 extra entry for EACH way you share it!
Good luck...winner will be chosen randomly and announced next Wednesday.
Anyone else have a birthday today?
Has anyone ever participated in a Spartan Race?...what'd you think?
I would love to do this. We have done the Rugged Maniac and I hear that the Spartan is so much more tougher, and lets face it, I wanna be bad a** ;) I would love to do the Virginia race in August. It's not to far from home and the kids will be off for summer break!!! I hope I get drawn!!!!
ReplyDeleteI hear ya...completing one of these would make me feel bad ass too!...Good luck, and don't forget to "share" this on social media - and then come back and let me know where you shared it, for extra entries in the giveaway! Good luck
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Emily! She has a special birthday because it's also pi day (you can tell I'm a total dork). I've wanted to try a Spartan race because my boyfriend said he would do one with me. I find this weird because he hates running and doesn't like to run with me, yet he'll train for this???
