Boys Weekend

Posted by CheapRunnerMike

As you read yesterday, Michelle and Kennedy were down in Florida this past weekend, leaving Jackson and I to fend for ourselves.  We did okay though, as we took in his first session of his new level for swimming lessons on Thursday and celebrated afterwards with a typical "Dad-on-his-own" meal at the Golden Arches…Happy Meal for the little man and a coffee (and maybe a couple of J's fries) for me.

After work on Friday we got all packed and headed up to the cottage for the weekend.  We aren't usually able to head up until Saturday evening as Michelle works during the day, but no Michelle meant no waiting around in town…we arrived by 5:00 Friday.  My parents are just a couple doors down and we went over to their place for dinner and even managed to get in a nice campfire that night.

On Saturday Jackson and I had decided that we should go for a bike ride/run together…he would ride his bike and I would run along with him.  Unfortunately it rained most of the morning, but it did clear up enough for us to get out around noon.

We didn't make it too far before J had a wipe out…not too bad but a little scraped up.  The training wheels really need to come off as I think they are more of a hindrance than a help at this point…that's a goal for the next weekend we get up there.  We went back to my parent's place and my Mum offered to watch Jackson while I went to finish my run.  I managed to get in 8 miles and avoided most of the rain in the process…just got caught by a little sprinkle near the end.  I even got to run down on the beach when it wasn't covered in snow and ice for the first time this year.  It won't be long and the beach will be packed, can't wait to get down there.

Saturday was a lazy night spent watching the Tigers game on the couch while Jackson had an early night…I was sitting by the phone waiting for the girls to call from Florida looking for clue help for their scavenger hunt race.

Sunday was a beautiful sunny morning and I was itching to get out on my bike.  I got all kitted up and set out to ride 42.2K (26.2 miles) as a show of support for Rhoda, who was running her first marathon in Toronto that morning.  I had offered a few times to run it with her and support her, but she just wanted to take it on solo, so this was my way of showing that I was there for her.

It was a great day for a ride, but the wind was whipping around pretty good.  I had to stop and get a picture in Port Franks for Kennedy when I saw this sign…

And of course who can turn down a water tower shot with the Canadian flag fluttering in the background?  Honestly I could probably take pictures of my bike all day…Michelle is probably jealous.

Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo, so Michelle and I celebrated with some margaritas…we'll get to work them off tonight though as we are back at our Masters Swim.  Tonight we focus on breaststroke and butterfly.  I've never in my life even attempted butterfly, so this should be interesting Smile

Did you get your Cinco de Mayo margarita yesterday?  What's your flavour?
Lime on the rocks for me!

When did you take the training wheels off for your kids?

Nice work fending for yourselves! :)
I slacked yesterday and we had turkey burgers instead of tacos... oops, fail.

  2. All you had to do was break up the turkey burger and serve it up in a taco shell...oh well, next year :)
Us boys always seem to do okay on our own, nice to spend some QT with my little buddy.
    Happy Teacher Appreciation Week Cori!

Sounds like you and J had a good boys weekend. I think our boys were around 4 or 5 when we took the training wheels off - not sure - it's been awhile.

I think yesterday was the first time we didn't really do anything to celebrate...We'll have to have a make-up Cinco de Mayo because a margarita is a must!

4 or 5 seems about the right time to get the training wheels off...J is 5, so it's time

I didn't have a margarita and I'm mad about it, although I probably will have one tonight to make up for it!

Love how supportive y'all are of each other!! Your bike looks like my boyfriend's bike-although I know nothing about bikes and I'm only saying that because they are the same colors. I don't even think they are the same brand. I remember fighting my parents about training wheel removal. For me it was the stopping that scared me.
