Reacquainting with Running

Posted by CheapRunnerMike

Anyone else happy it's Friday?  Ya, didn't think so Winking smile

This has been a pretty solid week in these parts…the weather seems to have finally turned the corner and realized that Spring started over a month ago.  Temperatures have been rising and it is actually warm most days now.

One of the big things I have noticed with the better weather is a greater desire to get out and run.  I haven't been running anywhere near as much as I usually do and the brutal winter we went through played a big part in that.  The cold and snow just wears on you.  Now I have managed to fill that running void with swimming and biking, but running is my real love and I am finally starting to enjoy it again.  I've been out a couple times already this week and will hit the paths again at lunch today.

It has been great because I'm able to run different routes every day now.  During the winter I run the same path over and over…I'm lucky that the city plows out the path at the park, but it just gets a bit repetitive.  Early in the Spring the paths are unreliable due to flooding.  But now I'm back to some variety and it's been great seeing the little changes on the old routes…kind of like meeting up with an old friend.

On Tuesday's run I was able to break out the new shoes I picked up at my last race, my New Balance 1400 racing flats.  I have a 15K (almost 10 miles) race coming up on Sunday and want to give them a try.  Boy were they quick!  I could really notice the quick turnover in my stride.  Looking forward to racing in them!  I'll be doing yet another MEC race, one of my favourite series…this time it is being held out at a local conservation area, and my Mum will be running the 15K as well.  It will be her longest run ever as she continues to train towards her first half marathon on June 1.  So I guess I'll get to run with my Mum on Mother's Day Smile  Oh, and both Michelle and Kennedy will be volunteering at the race as well…I hope they don't throw water at me.

I got out again for a lunch run on Wednesday, and I was shocked to learn that it was the first time I had run on back-to-back days since mid-March.  Wow, I had no idea!  The legs felt good though and I enjoyed running through the University.  Most of the students have now left for the summer and it is a really nice, peaceful run through there…nowhere near as busy as in the Fall.

A couple triathlon notes from the week…I joined the London Triathlon Club, which will be a great opportunity to meet some new people and learn from them as well.  Starting at the end of the month they hold a weekly "Splash 'n Dash" evening, featuring an open water swim followed by a short 5 to 7K run.  I'll be using that as a chance to get used to open water swimming after spending the last few months in the pool, as well as a chance to try out my new wetsuit which just showed up in the mail this week as well.

Looking forward to another good run today, then hitting the pool with Michelle for our Friday night swim date.  Hoping to get out for a spin on the bike this weekend as well and of course Sunday is race day…and Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all you moms!

How do you like to spend Mother's Day?

  4. Any chance for the two of us to spend some time together! Plus, our Friday night swim dates usually end up with drinks afterwards, is it's really a win-win!

Awww way to go Mike's mom!!! So inspiring! Since I'm not a mom yet, I love to spend Mother's Day doing whatever my mom wants to do. Last year she and my aunt went to get massages, I baked a cake for them, and then we met for a movie and then dinner. I think she wants to do the same thing this year!

  6. Glad to see you out and about again, looks like someone didn't miss a beat with that speed! Yay for tri club too, I know a lot of people find that really helps them!

Every mother's day I run a local 5k that is put on by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. The 5k run is women's only and typically gets over 1000 runners. They also have a family walk that gets another 2-3,000 people. It's amazing cause and everyone wears pink...just a great way to celebrate and raise $$. Unfortunately I didn't get to see my mom this mothers day as she was out of town. Soon though!

  7. I'm looking forward to meeting some new athletes in the area...it should be interesting.

It's nice having races that you run every year...something about the familiarity that is really enjoyable. Hope you had a good time!
