MEC London Race Review

Posted by Anonymous

Good morning everyone! I am cheating on Starbucks PSL this morning with a Skinny Vanilla Latte instead. It is not quite as good as the PSL but it is no sugar and fewer calories so I went with that for this morning. Hope you all have been able to enjoy a morning wake up beverage also!

Sunday, I had the privilege of running in the 3rd MEC (Mountain Equipment Company) London Race event of the year. This was my first MEC race. It was a no frills event that only cost $15 to enter!!!! Can’t go wrong with that. They have designed the events to keep costs low for runners in the local communities. Thank you for that MEC!

We arrived around 8:30, the race started at 9:00, so we had plenty of time to check out the area and get in some quick pics!

This race had a different vibe to it than other races I have participated in. It is a smaller event and there were a lot of families running, which was so great to see. There was a lot of excitement and joking going on at the starting line. It just felt fun to me and not serious whatsoever which I really enjoyed. I just wanted to have a fun, Sunday morning run.

It was fun, the whole way through. There were a lot of race volunteers along the way, always cheering and shouting out words of encouragement. It was also great to see people I knew along the way. It is an out-and-back race with multiple loops depending on the distance, so I was able to see Mike and the kids a couple times, and Michelle and the MIL.

Even after the finish, when we were mingling around and stuffing our face refueling with some snacks, there were people congratulating others and sharing stories of other running events. For me, it was just a really encouraging event to be at.

While we were sitting there Emily (the race director) came up to me and ask if I was Rhoda. Turns out I won 3rd place for the women in the 10K! I was surprised and excited to hear that. Like I said, it was not a huge event but winning 3rd place still meant that I got a prize!!

What Race events do you prefer?? Frills or no-frills?

What is your favorite day of the week?

  3. Congrats on placing, that is awesome!!! I think there are perks to frills and to no-frills races. For longer distances I'm willing to pay a little more to make sure there are some frills (basically the longer I know I am going to be out there, I wanna make sure that I have some good race support to go with it) but I don't mind the lower frill races for shorter distances.
