J's First Day & Watching the Waistline

Posted by CheapRunnerMike

My little boy is off to school today.  What a big day for him!  He'll be riding the bus all on his own and won't get home until 4:00 this afternoon.  He has really been looking forward to this day for a long time now…he's even been packing his lunch all week.  He keeps adding little things to his lunch bag, like apples and granola bars…I had to explain to him that he couldn't add his yogurt yesterday, but not sure he really understood why.  He got to go shopping with Mommy on Wednesday to get some more back to school clothes so he's all set…all that was missing was to get his mop of hair cut, so we took him to Supercuts after dinner last night.

He sat there sooooo quietly and did exactly as he was asked…what a relief for Michelle and I!  We are dreading what our little guy is going to be like in a classroom environment as he has (in our opinion) a great sense of humour, but let's just say that not everyone will appreciate it the way we do.  Sometimes he says things we find hilarious, but teachers may not necessarily agree…like when he tells you to "Suck it up, buttercup".  Last night he busted out another beauty on the way home.  Kennedy had to use the washroom really bad and was crossing her legs as tight as she could in the back seat, just trying to make it until we got home.  The poor kid practically had tears in her eyes.  Well Jackson sees that she is uncomfortable and he just wants to help…so he says to her, "Kennedy, why don't you just pee your pants?"  It was all Michelle and I could do to not bust out laughing, as laughing was probably the last thing Kennedy needed at that moment!

There is a Starbucks in the same plaza as the hairdressers, so I popped over and got Michelle and I a couple little treats while we waited…M's usual, the Passion Tea Lemonade, and I had my first #PSL of the season (non-fat, no-whip).  Delicious.

I've missed you, #PSL

As I mentioned in my last blog post, my Labour Day resolution was to eat better…so far so good.  I find that if I track what I eat I almost do a good job.  I use MyFitnessPal to track my food and exercise as I love the huge food database they have, the ability to add new foods just by scanning a barcode and the great multi-platform integration (works very well on iPhone, iPad and the web).  If you want a great (free!) tool to help you track your food and exercise to help reach your fitness goals I highly recommend this app!

I have been able to really get back on track with my running this week and today will be run number four (out of five days).  All of them seem to be quality runs too…not always fast, but good training.  I'll aim for 10K at lunch today and then head over to Runners Choice to pick up my race kit for the Springbank Half Marathon this weekend.  I'm looking forward to racing, but nervous as I'm not sure what to expect.  My training runs have been hit or miss for speed and that's not really what I'm shooting for this weekend anyways…I just want to get out, feel good and have a great time.  I need to remind myself I'm not training for a Half, I'm training for a Full.

After yesterday's run I got to enjoy a great treat, a Wild Berry Blast Hydration Popsicle!  It is a popsicle that is loaded up with electrolytes to help with recovery and hydration.  It was awesome!

Anyone else racing this weekend?

Do you track your calories?  Which app do you use?

Hydration Popsicles?  Tried any?

  1. Suck it up butter cup! I wonder if there are runners in the house...

When I used My Fitness Pal, I constantly was under my calories. I try to just make sure I feel satiated all day now lol

I've never had a hydration popsicle! just the cheepo frozen ice that comes in a pack of 100!

  2. I used to use the livestrong site to track my cals. I also did that a lot when I was actively losing weight (50 lbs on WW, kept it off for over 6 years now.) I have not been so good at that lately, just actually trying to eat ENOUGH to support my active lifestyle. Make sure you are doing that! It will help you going into the marathon.

    Getting so close!

  5. Jackson loves the cheapo freezies...he'll eat them all day if I let him.
MyFitnessPal works well for me, but that is a concern...always need to make sure to eat enough and not obsess too much.
